STORIES FROM THE HAPPY SCHOOL
MENSULVAN’S STORY – a teacher….
Mensulvan’s story is one of unique dedication and commitment to The Happy School children. He survived the forced labour camps of the Khmer Rouge regime to return to the PSD community and help poor children gain an education. He has over 30 years of teaching experience and is highly respected by the children and community alike. He is The Happy School’s most valuable asset and has worked largely on a voluntary basis, earning a small retired teachers' allowance from the government. He has built strong links with the children, families and community members and has told us that ‘… all I want to do is teach the Happy School children until I die’.
THIDA’S STORY – a student….
Thida is thirteen years old and lives in a tiny one-bedroom shack with her mother, father and younger brother. Her father works as a moto taxi driver in Phnom Penh and her mother works as a cleaner in a hotel. They earn a combined monthly wage of around $30 – 40 USD. Thida’s family live very much a hand to mouth existence with no extra money for health care let alone schooling fees. Thida attends The Happy School for free. She takes remedial classes to raise her education level to a standard where she is able to be re-integrated back into state school. Thida is a bright and energetic girl with aspirations to become a doctor. We hope to help her achieve this dream.
